Bare Grills is written by Alex Turner. The blog was set up in 2010 while I was retraining as a journalist in Cardiff, and was intended as an attempt to map out my new surroundings while pursuing my obsession with eating well – at the same time as being massively skint.
It’s been a slightly uneasy mix of gritty urban exploration (mainly via finding out where the good cheap restaurants & food shops are) and smugly showing off about eating loads of nice things that didn’t cost very much. Apart from straight-up greed, the blog has been motivated by pure nosiness about knowing the nooks & crannies of the city I live in, and inverse snobbery towards bullshit “aspirational” eating (unless someone else is paying/feeding me, obviously).
I’ve left Cardiff behind now but am continuing from my new home in Bristol. I make no apologies for the blog title, which perfectly captures the themes of adventure, food and a tight wallet in one piece of lame wordplay (courtesy of Juliun c90).
